Transforming Lives Since 1997

About Us

In 1997, on the occasion of Pakistan’s 50th anniversary of independence, a group of Pakistani American visionaries came together to work for human development in Pakistan and launched The Human Development Foundation. As transformational leaders with deep roots in Pakistan, they were passionate about human development and poverty eradication.

Nearly twenty years later, our quest for positive social change remains at the forefront, and we at the foundation, work tirelessly to help people have prosperous lives. Over the last 2 decades now, HDF has been battling multi dimensional poverty, through our unique “Power of Five” model of Holistic Community Development. Our programs have benefited over 2.3 Million people, and we continue to grow. HDF is striving to eradicate multidimensional poverty in our program areas through our unique Power of Five program and throughout the country through our advocacy campaigns.

Integrated

Program Model

HDF is striving to eradicate multidimensional poverty in our program areas through an integrated approach to sustainable development in 6 sectoral areas: Social Capital Development, Education & Literacy, Primary Healthcare, Livelihood & Food Security, Sustainable Environment, Partnerships aligned with

With over 600 field workers on the ground, HDF has over 20 years of experience in successfully implementing and operating projects from start to finish in all 5 program areas.

Social Capital

Development

Social Capital Development (SCD) forms the foundation for HDF’s integrated development programs driven by the philosophy of helping people help themselves. SCD teams play a proactive and engaging role in mobilizing communities to identify their needs and find solutions to their problems.

Embracing the rights-based approach, HDF strives to develop self-sustained communities. The process of social mobilization seeks to develop communities through building and strengthening local institutions as well as alliances formed on the basis of shared values, norms, vision and mutual cooperation. We facilitate institution building from the grassroot level. This is done by involving a group of like-minded people with common interests to form a Development Organization (DO). Village Development Organizations (VDOs) are formed at the village level and Local Support Organizations (LSOs) at the Union Council (UC) levels. Sector Committees are formed for education, health, livelihood and physical infrastructure, along with children forums, within each VDO.

Education &

Literacy

Providing quality education to children in marginalized communities is our flagship program. HDF works hard to make sure learning is always an enjoyable experience for children. The education program is designed to teach them decision making by helping them learn life skills including critical and analytical thinking. Teaching civic sense is also an integral part of the program. This molds them into productive members of the society.

We lay special emphasis on gender equality and community participation while taking local norms and culture into account. Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) encourage community participation and keeps parents involved in their children’s schooling process.

We have been establishing and maintaining non-formal and formal schools under this program for primary and secondary levels. We also conduct enrollment campaigns for HDF schools besides facilitating student enrollment in other schools. In addition to building our schools with modern facilities, we also provide contemporary training to our teachers by conducting regular teachers training programs to improve their teaching skills.

Primary

Healthcare

Primary Healthcare is a significant program of HDF. It focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles and providing preventive and curative health services to vulnerable and needy populations. We endeavor to maintain healthy communities through our primary preventive and curative healthcare activities with special emphasis on the well-being of mothers and children. Our Community Health Centers (CHCs) provide basic health facilities to marginalized communities and raise awareness about personal hygiene as well as communicable and non-communicable diseases. HDF ensures these health services are accessible, affordable and integrated into the holistic development process.

A team of trained professionals comprising of a doctor, Lady Health Visitors (LHVs), Dispenser and Community Health Workers (CHWs) raise awareness on health issues and deliver healthcare in all our regional offices. The CHCs have basic lab test arrangements and provide health services to the whole community. However, our focus remains on family planning, immunization, antenatal and postnatal services to women.

Livelihood &

Food Security

Livelihood & Food Security forms the foundation for HDF’s integrated development programs driven by the philosophy of helping people help themselves. SCD teams play a proactive and engaging role in mobilizing communities to identify their needs and find solutions to their problems.

Sustainable

Environment

This essential program aims to introduce new and sustainable activities with a focus on reversing the loss of environmental resources. Our main objective is to preserve the ecosystem and create a healthy environment. This is done by providing clean drinking water, better sanitation facilities, waste disposal, suitable adaptation to climate change and increase in forest cover. Our purpose is to raise the quality of life of individuals by providing them a clean environment.

During the process of social mobilization, environmental issues are highlighted and possible solutions are discussed in the community. Our sustainable environment team helps with problems the communities cannot solve themselves. This is done by approaching donors for partnerships, especially for Community Physical Infrastructure (CPI) projects. These include installation of hand pumps, tube wells, safe drinking water plants, construction of link roads, water channels lining, street pavements, latrines, sewerage system, flood bunds, reservoirs and construction of delay action dams among others.

Social

Partnerships
